WHAT DOES HEALTHY SKIN MEAN?
According to Dr. Obagi, dermatologist, founder, and medical director of Obagi Skin Health, healthy skin is soft and smooth in texture, is full, firm, and tight, has even color, is hydrated, is tolerant to the surrounding environment, has intact barrier function, and is free from disease.
Skin is an active and responsive organ and with the right care it can be one’s shining feature. Skin is our largest protective organ and all the different visible conditions result from that function. Healthy skin functions normal, maintains, and renews itself. As skin health deteriorates and ages signs of aging sets in. These signs include dehydration, fine lines and wrinkles, laxity, uneven tone and rough texture, and discoloration.
WHAT CAUSES SKIN HEALTH TO DETERIORATE?
Disruption in skin barrier function leads to skin weakness, sensitivity, dryness, and overall skin health deterioration.
WHAT IS SKIN BARRIER FUNCTION?
Barrier function acts as a protective cover to prevent penetration of harmful substances and prevent excessive trans-epidermal water loss. Barrier function consists Corneocytes or Stratum Corneum laying on top of each other and covered by a matrix of water, lipids, and proteins. These mechanisms need to in balance and work together to support the integrity of the skin barrier function. Disruption in this component balance can lead to skin weakness, sensitivity, and dryness.
SKIN BARRIER FUNCTION RESTORATION & REPAIR:
Barrier function can be repaired by restoring skin’s natural water, lipids, and protein balance and regulating natural skin exfoliation for a healthy six-week cycle of epidermal renewal.
